🧅 Ingredients
For Boiling the Daal

1 cup masoor daal (red lentils)
-
½ cup moong daal (washed yellow lentils)
-
4 cups water
-
1 tsp salt
-
½ tsp turmeric
-
¼ tsp red chili powder
For the Fry (Tarka)
-
3 tbsp oil or ghee
-
1 medium onion (finely chopped)
-
2 medium tomatoes (chopped)
-
1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
-
2 green chilies (slit)
-
1 tsp cumin seeds
-
1 tsp coriander powder
-
½ tsp red chili powder
-
½ tsp crushed red chili
-
½ tsp garam masala
-
Salt to taste
-
Fresh coriander (chopped)
-
Lemon slice (optional)
🍲 Instructions
Step 1: Boil the daal

Wash both lentils until water runs clear.

Add daal to a pot with water, salt, turmeric, and red chili powder.

Cook for 20–25 minutes on medium heat until soft and mushy.

Use a whisk or spoon to slightly mash the daal for a creamy texture.
Step 2: Prepare the Fry (Tarka)

Heat oil/ghee in a pan.
-
Add cumin seeds and let them crackle.
-
Add chopped onions and sauté until light golden.
-
Add ginger-garlic paste and cook for 1 minute.

Add tomatoes and cook until soft and oil separates.

Add red chili powder, crushed chili, coriander powder, salt, and garam masala.

Add green chilies.
Step 3: Combine

Add this tarka to the cooked daal.

Mix well and cook for 5 more minutes on low heat.

Adjust water depending on how thick you like your daal.
Step 4: Garnish
✔ Fresh coriander
✔ A squeeze of lemon
✔ Extra tarka on top (optional but delicious)
