Daal Fry Recipe (Pakistani Restaurant Style)

A comforting, flavorful, and aromatic lentil dish — ready in just 30 minutes. Perfect with roti, chawal, or naan.




🧅 Ingredients

For Boiling the Daal

  • 1 cup masoor daal (red lentils)

  • ½ cup moong daal (washed yellow lentils)

  • 4 cups water

  • 1 tsp salt

  • ½ tsp turmeric

  • ¼ tsp red chili powder

For the Fry (Tarka)

  • 3 tbsp oil or ghee

  • 1 medium onion (finely chopped)

  • 2 medium tomatoes (chopped)

  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste

  • 2 green chilies (slit)

  • 1 tsp cumin seeds

  • 1 tsp coriander powder

  • ½ tsp red chili powder

  • ½ tsp crushed red chili

  • ½ tsp garam masala

  • Salt to taste

  • Fresh coriander (chopped)

  • Lemon slice (optional)


🍲 Instructions

Step 1: Boil the daal

  1. Wash both lentils until water runs clear.

  2. Add daal to a pot with water, salt, turmeric, and red chili powder.

  3. Cook for 20–25 minutes on medium heat until soft and mushy.

  4. Use a whisk or spoon to slightly mash the daal for a creamy texture.

Step 2: Prepare the Fry (Tarka)

  1. Heat oil/ghee in a pan.

  2. Add cumin seeds and let them crackle.

  3. Add chopped onions and sauté until light golden.

  4. Add ginger-garlic paste and cook for 1 minute.

  5. Add tomatoes and cook until soft and oil separates.

  6. Add red chili powder, crushed chili, coriander powder, salt, and garam masala.

  7. Add green chilies.

Step 3: Combine

  1. Add this tarka to the cooked daal.

  2. Mix well and cook for 5 more minutes on low heat.

  3. Adjust water depending on how thick you like your daal.

Step 4: Garnish

✔ Fresh coriander
✔ A squeeze of lemon
✔ Extra tarka on top (optional but delicious)

❄️ Storage

  • Refrigerate for 2–3 days in an airtight container.

  • Add a splash of water when reheating; daal thickens as it cools.

  • Freezes well for up to 1 month.
